The legendary MiG-21 , India’s longest-serving fighter jet, has officially bid farewell after over six decades of service.
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-21, a supersonic jet fighter designed by the Soviet Union, became one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history. Introduced in the late 1950s, it served with more than 60 countries and earned the title of the world’s most-produced supersonic jet. For India, the MiG-21 was more than just a fighter

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called it a symbol of “national pride,” recalling its unmatched contribution in the 1971 war, Kargil conflict, and countless defence operations. Once known as the “backbone of the IAF,” the MiG-21 trained generations of Indian pilots and stood as a sign of resilience and power. With its retirement, India now turns the page toward indigenous fighters like Tejas, carrying forward the spirit of self-reliance in defence.
