Boom Supersonic's XB-1 prototype jet has officially gone supersonic.
In a historic milestone for aviation, Boom Supersonic's XB-1 prototype has achieved supersonic flight, reaching speeds over Mach 1.1. This achievement marks a significant step towards the development of commercial supersonic travel, promising to cut flight times in half for long-haul routes.
The XB-1, dubbed the "Son of Concorde," is designed to carry passengers between major cities like New York and London in just over three hours. With over 130 preorders from major airlines, Boom Supersonic plans to produce the Overture, a commercial airliner capable of flying at nearly double the speed of sound.
This development not only revives the era of supersonic travel but also aims to do so in a more sustainable and economically viable manner. Boom's commitment to reducing carbon emissions and operating costs could make supersonic flights accessible to a broader range of travelers, heralding a new age in aviation.
