The online gaming sector in India, valued at over $2 billion, is set for explosive growth following a major policy shift by Google. In a move to address anti-competition concerns, the tech giant has proposed to the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that it will allow all compliant "real money games" (RMGs) on its Play Store. This change will create a level playing field for a wide array of gaming startups, many of whom were previously excluded from Google's platform.

The decision comes after a CCI investigation prompted by complaints from gaming companies that alleged discriminatory practices. Google's new proposal will end its selective pilot program and allow all RMGs that are legal under Indian law to be distributed on the Play Store. The company is also revising its Google Ads policy to permit advertising for skill-based games, provided advertisers meet certain regulatory conditions.

This move is a massive win for India's gaming startup ecosystem. It removes a significant barrier to market access and monetization for thousands of developers, particularly in the social gaming and esports categories. With companies like STAN already attracting millions in funding from global investors, this policy change is expected to further accelerate investment and innovation, cementing India's position as a global gaming powerhouse.
