In a move that solidifies its commitment to sustainable mobility, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has launched the "Green Vehicle Policy (GVP) 2025." This new framework, which replaces the city's 2021 EV policy, sets an ambitious target: to ensure that at least 50% of all vehicle sales in the city are electric by the year 2030.
The policy is comprehensive, focusing not only on electric vehicles but also on other alternative fuels like hydrogen and biofuels. To achieve its goal, the SMC plans to establish over 460 charging stations across the city, ensuring there is a station approximately every square kilometer. The policy offers direct incentives and subsidies for commercial three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles (LCVs), and even pink e-autos for women entrepreneurs.
Surat’s GVP 2025 is more than just a subsidy program; it's a long-term roadmap. The city plans to create a dedicated Green Vehicle Fund, establish local manufacturing units for green vehicles, and promote battery recycling projects. By combining technological adoption with public-private collaboration and citizen engagement, Surat is aiming to become a model for other Indian cities looking to lead the green mobility revolution.
